Linux Microsoft Reaches Out to Open-Source Community It appears that Microsoft is reaching out to the Open Source Community. While my immediate response was something along the lines of "What are they up to now?", after reading the entire article and thinking about it for a bit - I think they may be genuinely interested.
Main Page Still Taking Back the Web Firefox has now hit 50,000,000 downloads. Amazing. If you aren't using Firefox yet, you should really try it out - regardless of what OS you are using. Keep up the good work FF team. --jeremy
Linux BPLUG Presentation II The BPLUG presentation (mentioned here) went well (at least I think it did). There were quite a few other presenters and I learned a bit from each of them, which is always good. If you're in the area I'd recommend you check out the next meeting.
Linux Open Wallets for Open-Source Software I mentioned this a while back, but that post focused more on acquisitions. The trend is continuing and VC is now coming back to the Open Source space. JBOSS recently got $10 Million and the articles reports that almost $150 Million was raised by Open Source companies in 2004. Luckily,
Main Page Apple Gets Silly - Again Apple continues to do its best to make people not like them, which is a shame since they make some really cool products. You may remember they recently sued sites giving them free press. They have now completely pulled all books published by Wiley from their stores, as a result
Linux LQ Radio Interview #1 - Tom Adelstein and Sam Hiser A little overdue, but LQ Radio is finally getting off the ground. The first LQ Radio show should be available next month and the first LQ Radio interview has been posted. The interview features Tom Adelstein and Sam Hiser. We cover a variety of topics and I think the end
Linux Deception in Texarkana It's unfortunate to see both the Open Source community and a small town taken advantage of like this. Kudos to Robin 'roblimo', both for taking the time to do the reporting for that article and for having the patience and fortitude to be able to have
Linux BLUG Presentation For any of you who may be in the area, I'll be presenting at the next Buffalo Professional Linux Users Group meeting. The main topic I'll be covering is MySQL. If you'll be in or around Buffalo next Thursday, make sure to stop by
Linux LinuxWorld Canada Keynote - Paul Tsaparis of HP The second Keynote of the day was from HP Canada CEO Paul Tsaparis. A large part of the keynote was a "Power of Linux" video, which was basically a testimonial from Dreamworks. The video has some interesting bits, but was a little too pro vendor IMHO. The video
Linux LinuxWorld Canada Visionary Series - John 'maddog' Hall While I was a tad late to this session by maddog, entitled "Free and Open Source Software: Back to the Future", the part I did catch was very good. His first point was that, until the early 80's the only way you ever got software was
Linux LinuxWorld Canada - Day 1 I'm back from day 1 of LinuxWorld Canada. The show definitely has a different feel that the other LinuxWorlds, mostly as a result of the expo floor being shared between LinuxWorld and NetworkWorld. The conference is more "suit" than even the East coast US show and
Main Page The Importance of Open Document Formats This article, while very short, begins to underscore the importance of open document formats. Without them, your data is locked in and you are beholden to a third-party to get at it. It should be obvious why this is "a bad thing". Especially for governments and the public
Linux LinuxWorld Canada Just a reminder that LinuxWorld Canada, which is being held in Toronto, will run from April 19th-20th. I'll be making the trip, so if you'd like to meet up for any reason, drop me a line. Remember, since LQ is a show sponsor, I am able
Main Page Tim O'Reilly on Self-publishing Tim has posted his comments on self-publishing. As many of you know, I have a book in the very early stages and I choose not to go the self published route. Reading what Tim wrote reaffirms my decisions, which makes me happy - Tim is smart and I trust his
Main Page Gmail Now Supports Feeds It looks like Gmail now supports feeds. This feature doesn't seem to be enabled for me yet, but a screenshot is included in the linked post. I've still not found a web-based aggregator that I like, maybe this will be it. Is anyone else seeing this
Linux BitKeeper and Linux II This seems to be getting uglier and uglier. I've still not had the amount of time needed to properly sort out all the info here, but I'm a bit surprised the fallout has been this bad. There is a real danger of the community becoming fractured
Linux Munich Chooses Debian as its Distro Looks like Munich has selected a Distro for its Linux migration. While it was Suse, along with IBM, that did the original year-long pilot, the city choose to go with Debian for the final rollout. One has to wonder if Suse would have been selected if it was still an
Main Page Windows XP SP2 Now Required to Get Security Updates While it comes as no surprise to me (at least from some of the reports that I have heard) that Windows XP SP2 uptake has been slow, it is surprising that Microsoft made it official that PCs must have SP2 in order for Windows XP updates and security patches to
Main Page SCO's Revenue Continues to Plunge Wow, it has been a while since a SCOXE related post here. Almost hard to believe that the case is still going on. It should come as no surprise, though, that SCO's revenue continues to fall. They claim to anticipate that their UNIX business will see a turnaround
Main Page More Hiring of Open Source Programmers Looks like Firefox/Mozilla programmers are being increasingly recruited by large companies. First it was Google and now IBM is joining in. Being able to closely tie FF in with a middleware stack or web service is an extremely good business proposition and it's great to see some
Linux Want to Win an LQ Shirt? Interested in helping to spread the word about LinuxQuestions.org and have the chance to win a great limited edition LQ shirt in the process? The latest LQ Contest has begun. Good luck. --jeremy
Linux BitKeeper and Linux I'm back and just starting to catchup on things. Looks like there was some drama while I was away. It appears that Linus will no longer be using Bitkeeper for the main Linux repository after Larry revoked the free license. You can get some of the details here,
Main Page Ready for the OSBC? The Open Source Business Conference (OSBC) starts tomorrow, so if you're in the area make sure to check it out. Looks to be a very good conference and LQ is a proud sponsor. I'd have loved to attend, but I am actually traveling somewhere else this
Main Page Technorati: Tags Looks like the tags functionality at technorati is having some problems getting the correct post for some tags here at my blogs. I emailed their support and was quite impressed to get a response in about 30 minutes. I gave them some additional info and hopefully the problem will be
Linux Dell Offering Linux Preloads Again? It appears that Dell is once again offering workstations preloaded with Linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS to be exact). A major manufacturer selling Linux workstations is something that has been sorely needed, and hopefully once one major manufacturer starts others will follow. It's easy to be a
